Work Visas and Immigration

Visas for foreign nationals

In Greece, hiring foreigners without valid work permits can result in fines, legal action, or visa cancellation. Strict monitoring is undertaken by the Greek government to ensure jobs are first available to Greek citizens. Therefore, Greece has limited skilled migration programs for foreigners, but there are provisions for highly skilled professionals in sectors like IT, engineering, finance, and healthcare, and several types of visas are available to foreign workers.

  • Type D Visa: This allows a foreign national (from outside Greece, the EU, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland) to work in Greece for a period of 90 to 365 days. Proof of an approved employment contract, qualifications, funds, and health insurance must be provided. It can be extended if the employment agreement is still valid.
  • EU Blue Card Holders: Foreign nationals holding an EU Blue Card issued by another EU/EEA member state may enter Greece and carry out economic activities for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a work permit.
  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) & Startups: Foreign investors and entrepreneurs can start businesses in Greece under initiatives like the Golden Visa Program.

Foreigners may also apply for a short-term Business Visa, which is issued for short-term business visits, attending meetings, or exploring business opportunities in Greece. It does not permit full-time employment in a Greek company.

Sponsorship and employer responsibilities

Hiring a foreign national in Greece requires compliance with immigration, labor, and tax regulations.

Eligibility criteria

  • Confirm that the foreign applicant has the required qualifications and that no suitable Greek citizen or EU/EEA resident is available.
  • Obtain approval from the Greek Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, demonstrating the necessity of hiring a non-EU national.
  • Submit a signed employment contract, company registration documents, and the applicant’s credentials to the Greek consulate or embassy.

Required documentation

  • Valid passport with at least six months’ validity
  • Employment contract specifying job duties, salary, and duration
  • Company registration and letter of intent
  • Certified copies of educational and professional qualifications
  • Work permit application and residence permit application
  • Completed visa application form and biometric photos

Post-arrival requirements

  • Tax Identification Number (AFM): After entering Greece, the foreign worker must apply for an AFM for tax purposes.
  • Social Insurance Number (AMKA): The worker must register with the social security system for healthcare and pension benefits.
  • The worker must update local authorities in case of change of address, employment status, or permit renewal.
