Work Visas and Immigration

Visas for foreign nationals

Foreign nationals who wish to work in Belize typically use a Temporary Employment Permit, which is valid for one year. A Digital Nomad Visa is available for remote workers who are working for a company outside of Belize; it’s a renewable permit that’s valid for six months. More recently, Belize has launched an investment-linked permanent residency visa that allows foreign entrepreneurs to bypass the traditional one-year waiting period for permanent residency if they have made a significant investment in a Belizean company that’s in a qualifying sector.

Sponsorship and employer responsibilities

When hiring a foreign national, employers in Belize must prove that they were unable to find a qualified Belizean national for the role. This includes advertising the role for at least three consecutive weeks and providing proof of that advertisement, plus an interview with the Labour Department to explain why no local applicants could be selected. Companies must submit an application including a sponsorship letter, plus pay a permit fee, which can range from $150 to $3,000 BZD.
