Work Visas and Immigration

Visas for foreign nationals

In the United Arab Emirates, hiring foreigners without valid work permits can result in fines of up to 1,000,000 AED per case. Employment visas that foreign workers in the UAE may apply for include the following.

  • Standard Work Visa: For individuals employed in the private sector, government sector, or free zones, typically valid for two years
  • Green Visa: For skilled workers, freelancers, and investors, offering longer residency without the need for employer sponsorship
  • Mission Visa: For short-term projects or temporary assignments, usually valid for 90 days

Foreigners may also apply for a Short-Term Visit Visa, which is issued for attending meetings, conferences, or exploring business opportunities in the UAE. It does not permit full-time employment in an Emirati company.

Sponsorship and employer responsibilities

Hiring a foreign national in the United Arab Emirates requires compliance with immigration, labor, and tax regulations. The sponsoring employer (or employer of record) must meet the following requirements.

Eligibility criteria

  • Confirm that the foreign applicant has the required qualifications and that no suitable UAE citizen is available.
  • Obtain approval from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) for the specific work permit category.
  • Submit a signed job offer, company registration documents, and the applicant’s credentials to the MoHRE.

Required documentation

  • Valid passport with at least six months’ validity
  • Employment contract specifying job duties, salary, and duration
  • Company registration and letter of intent
  • Certified copies of educational and professional qualifications
  • Work permit application (e.g., standard work permit, temporary work permit, or mission work permit)
  • Completed visa application form and biometric photos

Post-arrival requirements

  • Emirates ID: After entering the UAE, the foreign worker must apply for an Emirates ID for identification and access to government services.
  • Medical examination: Ensure the employee undergoes a medical fitness test as required by UAE law.
  • Updates: Update local authorities in case of change of address, employment status, or permit renewal.
