Work Visas and Immigration

Visas for foreign nationals

The Netherlands has structured skilled migration programs for foreign workers, including (but not limited to) the following visa types.

  • Highly Skilled Migrant Visa: For individuals with a job offer from a recognized sponsor in the Netherlands, this permit is for highly educated professionals with specialized skills. Employers must meet minimum salary requirements.
  • Single Permit (GVVA): This combined residence and work permit is for skilled or unskilled labor exceeding 90 days.
  • Intra-Corporate Transfer (ICT) Permit: This visa covers non-EU employees transferred within the same company to a Dutch branch.
  • EU Blue Card: This visa, valid for EU citizens only, is for workers with a university degree or five years’ professional experience. Employers must offer a contract of 12 months or more and meet minimum salary requirements.
  • Seasonal Worker Permit: This work permit, valid in particular sectors like agriculture and tourism, is good for up to 24 weeks.
  • Permit for Self-Employed Persons/Start-ups: The Netherlands offers entrepreneurs who meet certain criteria a work permit valid for up to two years.

Foreigners may also apply for a Short-Stay Business Visa, which is issued for attending meetings, conferences, or exploring business opportunities in the Netherlands and does not permit full-time employment in a Dutch company. In the Netherlands, hiring foreigners without valid work permits can result in legal action, fines of up to €11,250 EUR per employee, and/or revocation of business licenses.
