Work Visas and Immigration

Visas for foreign nationals

In Switzerland, hiring foreigners without valid work permits can result in fines, legal action, or revocation of business licenses. The Swiss government enforces strict regulations to ensure employment opportunities are first available to Swiss citizens and EU/EFTA nationals unless specialized skills are required. Therefore, Switzerland has structured skilled migration programs for foreigners, with provisions for highly skilled professionals in sectors like engineering, healthcare, information technology, and finance. These visas are available for foreign workers in Switzerland:

  • L Permit (Short-Term Residence Permit): For employment contracts lasting less than one year, typically used for temporary assignments or internships.
  • B Permit (Long-Term Residence Permit): For fixed-term or indefinite employment contracts, usually issued for one to five years and renewable under specific conditions.
  • G Permit (Cross-Border Commuter Permit): For residents of neighboring countries who work in Switzerland and return home at least once a week.

Foreigners may also apply for a Short-Term Business Visa, which is issued for attending meetings, conferences, or exploring business opportunities in Switzerland. It does not permit full-time employment in a Swiss company.
