Work Visas and Immigration
Visas for foreign nationals
In Bulgaria, hiring foreigners without valid work permits can result in fines, legal action, or visa cancellation. Strict monitoring is undertaken by the Bulgarian government to ensure jobs are first available to Bulgarian citizens unless specialized skills are required. Therefore, Bulgaria has limited skilled migration programs for foreigners, but there are provisions for highly skilled professionals in sectors like IT, engineering, healthcare, and education. Several types of visas are available for foreign workers in Bulgaria.
- Type D Visa: Long-term visa required for foreign nationals intending to work in Bulgaria, typically valid for up to one year and renewable
- EU Blue Card: Designed for highly skilled EU residents, allowing residence and work in Bulgaria for up to four years, with the possibility of renewal
- Digital Nomad Visa: Launched in 2025, the Digital Nomad Visa is for those who already hold a D visa. It allows those working for non-Bulgarian entities to reside in the country for one year. It is renewable for an additional year.
Foreigners may also apply for a short-term business visa, which is issued for short-term business visits, attending meetings, or exploring business opportunities in Bulgaria. It does not permit full-time employment in Bulgaria.
